This country never ceases to amaze me. Like most of the world South Korea’s current generation prefers to work behind desks. They’re labour force is aging and nobody wants to do the ‘dirty jobs’. In Korea though, the answer isn’t government incentive programs or increased wages* - it’s technology, or at least in this case it is.
In March, a Pohang prison [a city not too far from us] will begin a month long trial with three robot guards. According to the BBC the robots are more like an alarm system,
equipped with cameras and other sensors that allow them to detect risky behaviour such as violence and suicide.
The government sponsored program is initiating what they believe could be a huge export industry for the country. Personally I think they’ll have to go through a major redesign if they’re going to want to survive in American prisons…
*Actually I have no idea about what the government is doing in regards to this situations. I DO know that there are a ton of foreign labourers though! -anth
